Newark Dominate at North NottsOn a cold winters morning more suited to indoor hockey, Newark rolled up at Manor sports centre to play in North Notts' christmas fundraiser to raise funds for Alex Greer, and the charity helping him through his rehabilitation after his accident. With Newark being the only club to send a squad North Notts were guarenteed at least one squad in the final.
The pools were sorted and Newark found themselves up against 3 very good Notts teams. The frozen pitch thawed out quickly as the games began and Newark hit the ground running and dominated the first game from start to finish. Even with all the possesion though Newark only managed to score 1 goal, if proved to be enough though and Newark started the day with a win.
Game two was against tougher opposition who had lost there first game and this was a more evenly matched game though. Newark again had chances but couldnt find the backboard in a frustrating fixture. Again the Newark defence held strong though and Newark took a point from the fixture after it finished 0-0.
Newark then stayed on to play there last pool game against the best team in there pool. This was always going to be a tough fixture and it soon showed with Notts having all the early pressure, Newark though scored against the run of play and the momentum swung in Newarks favour with Notts going into dissaray. They did get one final chance though before the final whistle. This was a controversial goal to say the least as one rule set in the morning was that there was to be no hitting at goal only pushes slaps and flicks to score. The goal was scored by a hit but the umpire gave the goal and while Newark were disappointed took it on the chin and played on. The score at the final whistle was 1-1 and Newark had booked there place in the semi's.
The semi final saw Newark paired up with pool 1s winners who had the services of an Australian National league player at there disposal. He was kept in Nic Jenner
s pocket though the whole game and was very innefective apart from scoring a penalty flick when the ball was stopped on the line by Elizabeth Wakeland. Newark though were the better all round team and came away 3-1 winners booking there place in the final. But who were Newark to play, the other semi had gone to flicks and after a tense sudden death shoot out it was the team who Newark had drawn 1-1 with in the pool games. Game on then in the final and Newark started brilliantly instantly putting Notts under pressure. The pressure soon took its toll on Notts as Newark drew first blood putting the ball across to the back post for Danny Hendrie to slot in easily. Newarks first spurred them on to score more and the second soon followed from the unlikeliest of players. Elizabeth Wakeland popping up at the back post to deflect the ball into the goal and queue around a whole minute of mad celebrations from the whole team as they congratulated her on her goal. Newark wrapped up the win minutes later when they caught Notts on the break and left the keeper stranded and scored there 3rd. Notts had no reply and the time ticked away till the final whistle went, Newark victorious and another win to add to the growing list of tournament wins for the up and coming starlets of Newark hockey club.

Newark start defence of Mansfield league
Newarks defence of the Mansfield summer league started on thursday night, with a lack of availability for this weeks fixture it was left to Nic Jenner
and Luke Davies to step in and help out. The league started just as last years ended as Newark where drawn against Mansfield and once again showed they were fully prepared for defending their crown. Daniel Hendrie on the right and Nathan Wakeland on the left made for an unstoppable force and ran rings around the Mansfield defence Newark found themselves 2-0 up at half time and where in no mood for slowing down. The second half was just as relentless and while Mansfiekd did manage to get a couple of goals in the second half Newark proved just too strong and came away 5-2 winners.
With the reduced size of the league this year Newark were joint top now with Nottingham as they beat Rolls Royce, who were Newarks next opponents. Newark again started strong but could take nothing for granted as Rolls Royce were fielding the ever dangerous Jeff Longden up front and proved his worth only moments after Newark had taken the lead and it was looking likely to be a tense game, however Newark had other ideas and stepped up there game and yet again came away 5-2 winners putting them within reach of the final.
The other game on the evening further helped Newarks cause as Mansfield beat Nottingham putting both of them on 3 points, Rolls Royce are on 0 and Newark leading the way on 6 points. Next week is looking better as more players are available so hopefully Newark can add to there ever growing trophy haul.

Newark ladies Dominate Rushcliffe
An all out team performance saw Newark Ladies crowned as Rushcliffe hockeys undefeated champions after seven weeks of action packed hockey. Having played 12 games Newark had won 10 and drawn only 2 and found themselves top of the regional leagues, with an invite to the finals at Becket school in West Bridgford against Boots, Derby allsorts and Dukeries who advanced as the best runners up. Newarks first game was against Dukeries who in previous weeks have had a few run ins with certain people from Newark on the pitch and they wernt always involving the players themselves when on one occasion even the umpires had a falling out. Newark showed them how to play hockey though and took the advantage on the night beating Dukeries 2-0, and with the other game ending 0-0 Newark took the early lead. The second game of the evening was against Derby allsorts who proved a more difficult adversery but Newark held there nerve and managed to get a goal in the dieing minutes to seal the win. With one game left to play the winners spot came down to Newark who were on 6 points and Dukeries who had won there second game putting them just 3 points behind Newark, Boots and Derby were left with just 1 point a piece. The final game was a nerve racking affair with both teams pushing. Newarks nerves were eased slightly when Dukeries went a goal down to Derby and were eased even more when only moments later found themselves a goal up against Boots. None of the teams would give up though and there were chances in both games for more goals Newark were the first to strike again though putting them 2 up and now were cruising and the evenings results were sealed when Dukeries conceded there second of the evening against Derby. All that was left now was to give out the prizes and Newark to have there photo opportunity with the winners palte.
A big thank you to Camilla and Amber for sorting it all out, all the players the umpires and to the spectators who came down to cheer us on every week.
