Latest Mens News:

Joynesys Journal
As I am sure you are aware the ladies Section Captain Sue Birkett has a bit of a blog (‘Birketts Blog’) on the ladies section of the website so I thought as the newly appointed Mens Section Captain I would do something similar (until the club find something more interesting to put on this page) so please now find Below Joynesys Journal in which you can find information on the mens section including various events, match reports, goal scorers and much more. I will also be journaling what I have been up to throughout my time as mens section captain.

If anyone has any ideas for the new season for both on and off the pitch, or if you are interested in playing hockey for Newark what ever you’re standard please e mail me at: joynesy98@yahoo.com.

Day 245: 07/01/2012: 2012 has finally arrived and Newark Men’s kicked of this Olympic year with a friendly, Men’s 1s (Greens) Vs Potential 1s (Whites).

There was a long awaited return for 1s captain and now proud father Ben Brown, as well as Danny Hendrie who I am shore will be working hard to try and claim a 1st team spot after his time away with Mansfield as there will be stiff competition for places. It was also good to see a cameo from Matt and Adam Reynolds before they both return to Uni

A big thanks should go to Holly Ainsworth and James Middleton for umpiring and to all those who came along to watch.

Both sides fielded strong teams and the result did not tell the whole story. Although the Green team came out 5-1 winners thanks predominantly to some simple yet slick penalty corner routines, the opposition constantly caused them problems on the break exploiting the Greens lack of pace at the back.

The Greens for the most part passed the ball round well keeping possession but at times failed to find that killer ball despite lose marking from the White team. The Whites were most dangerous on the break, breaking after picking up lose or stray Green passes. The Whites more direct style caused problems for the Greens summed up by their goal in which Simon Higgs sliced through the centre of the Greens defence to play a simple ball to Chairman Arran ‘give him enough chances and he will score eventually’ Coggan who made a neat finish from close range. Both sides had a similar number of chances the only difference was the accuracy in front of goal.

Both teams will be able to take something away from this game and the run out should help with big league games starting on the 14th

Scorers

Greens
John Reynolds (2)
Scott Robinson
Sam Smith
Nigel Bett

Whites
Arran Coggan (Should have had at least 3 but sadly only 1)

Day 237: 30/12/2011: Unfortunately I have very sad news today, Paul Howden captain of Kestrels Hockey a team I am proud to be a part of passed away on the 28th. For all those who new Paul it is a very sad day, Paul was a great guy who loved hockey. He was one of those guys who loved to see people enjoying playing no matter how good or bad you were. He was a team player and was always willing to give team players a chance. It was a great pleasure to have known Paul and although recently his health had taken a turn for the worst he was always upbeat. Myself and all those that new Paul will miss him greatly, our thoughts are with his family at this time. For those that didn’t know Paul just know that Hockey has lost a huge ambassador for the sport and that without people like Paul Howden Hockey would not be nearly as enjoyable.

Day 222: 15/12/2011:Just a quick note to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and I hope to see you all again in the New Year fresh and ready for the second half of the season. There are lots of important games to come so have a relaxing break and make sure you all come back fired up for the conclusion of another season at Newark HC and if Santa can bring the Men’s 1s some victories like he did last year I will be very grateful.

Day 203: 26/11/2011: An undefeated weekend for the men’s section, a promising sign after some mixed results over the last few weeks. The 1s got a much-needed point to end their run of defeats in their game thanks to another Nick Crouch Hat-trick. The 2s although losing a 2 goal lead still managed to get a point at high flying Mansfield and probably the most impressive result of the day was the 3s comprehensive 4-0 win over Mansfield 3s. Well done to all

Day 201: 24/11/2011: I was at the Newark and Sherwood Sports Awards this evening. It was a well organised event in which hockey and Newark Hockey Club was well represented although it would be nice to see one or two more nomination next year. Big congratulations to Tim Burch who won Volunteer of the Year and also came runner up for the Outstanding Contribution to Sport award. Tim does so much for the Club and the Junior section in particular so this award is very much deserved. On behalf of the club I would like to congratulate Tim and thank him for all the work he does, long may it continue.

Also congratulations to former Newark player Adam Dixon who won the Senior Sports Person award and is currently in New Zealand with the GB team preparing to challenge for the Champions Trophy.

Day 181: 04/11/2011: There was a decent turnout for training this week, nice to see a couple of new faces in amongst the regulars. Three big games this week with the 1s looking to break their 3 game losing streak against Nottingham Players who start the game 1 point and 2 places below them. The 2s will be hoping to go one better than the draws they got in the previous 2 weeks at home to 3rd place Nuneaton and the 3s play away at high flying Loughborough Sharks in a bid to get their first points of the season. GOOD LUCK to all teams.

Day 165: 19/10/2011: FANTASY HOCKEY Week 3 matches: Pasky’s 7 won the spot prize of a bag of Haribo Star Mix for being the highest points scoring team this week with 37 points with Stick Tacklers taking the consolation prize for propping up the table scoring just 3 points. With a relatively low scoring week no team scored exactly 38 points to claim the rolled over bar of Cadburys. You can see all the points and positions below.

This week’s top scoring player was Laura Donoldson who scored 14 points (Appearance 2, Result 3, Goals 4, MOM 5) and for the men it was a lean week with David Colcomb, Nathan Price and Adam Leftley all scoring 5 (Appearance 2, Result –2, MOM 5)

No Spot prizes for week 4 so it’s just for pride this week, however the rolled over bar of Dairy Milk for any team that scores exactly 38 points is still up for grabs.

Day 157: 11/10/2011: FANTASY HOCKEY

The second week of matches has seen some big changes in positions for most teams. Scouting For Goals won the spot prize of a 120g bar of Dairy Milk for being by far the highest points scoring team this week amassing a huge 86 points. You can see all the points and positions below.

Spot Prize-winners This Week =

Top Ranked Team – Scouting for Goals
Team to Score 38 points exactly – Joynesy’s 1st VII (I have decided as this is my team not to take the prize so it will roll over to next week)

This week’s highest scoring player was Megan Beard who scored a massive 21 points (Appearance 2, Goals 11(4x2 + 3 points for Hat trick), Result 3, MOM 5). The other high scorer from the ladies was Terri Mcleod with 16 points (Appearance 2, Goals 4, result 3, Clean Sheet 2, MOM 5). From the Mens section this week’s highest scorer was Sam Taylor with 10 points (Appearance 2, Result 3, MOM 5)

Day 154: 07/10/2011: FANTASY HOCKEY The first week of matches have now been played and the league table currently stands like this:

Top 5 Teams:

The Mighty Morphs 57
Chappels Giants 57

Joynesy's 2nd VII 54
Baugh's Bruisers 53
Dirty Daisy's 53

Breakdown of this week’s top performing players:

Nic Jenner and Holly Ainsworth were the top scoring players overall, scoring 14 points each (Nic = Appearance 2, Clean Sheet 4, Result 3 MOM 5, Holly = Appearance 2, Clean Sheet 2, Goal 2, Result 3, MOM 5).

Top scoring player from the Men’s was Garry Barker scoring 10 points (Appearance 2, Result 3 MOM 5) closely followed by Arran Coggan 9 points and Dave Colcombe 8 points(Arran = Appearance 2, Result 3, Goals 4, Dave = Appearance 2, Result 1, MOM 5)

This Week (For matches played on the 08/10/2011) there will be a small spot prize of 120g bar of Cadburys Dairy Milk for the team which scores the highest points in that week and also for any team who scores exactly 38 points. (If no team scores 38 points the prize will roll over to next week)

Day 148: 01/10/2011: A mixed bag of results for the men’s section this week but great to see three full teams out. Lets make sure we keep it up for the rest of the season and the results will come.

Details for the FANTASY HOCKEY to come.

Day 147: 30/09/2011:The deadline for entry to the FANTASY HOCKEY is fast approaching. If you want to enter make sure you e mail your teams to joynesy98@yahoo.com by Saturday. The Prize for the winning team currently stands at £40 but the more teams that enter the higher the prize.

If you have yet to get a team in and are struggling for ideas of which players to put in I can tell you so far the most picked female is Sarah Gray and male is Nick Crouch. Position wise most popular choice for goalkeeper is Sarah Gray, defender is Nicola Jenner, midfielder is Nick Crouch and forward is Shanade Orsmond. The players most chosen as captain are Nicola Jenner and Sarah Gray.

Day 145: 28/09/2011:A reasonable turnout for training tonight however more players would be good. Thanks to Anthony Tallis for taking the warm-up and to John Reynolds for stepping in to sort out the 1s training in Keith’s absence. Can we make sure we are ready to go for the warm-up at 8:15pm especially the captains (Benny).

All 3 teams are in action on Saturday the 1s are away at Coalville, the 2s are home against Loughborough Sharks and the 3s travel to Worksop. Good Luck to everyone lets see if we can get some early victories to kick start the league season.

Day 141: 24/09/2011:With South Notts only able to get out one team to play us this week there was only one Mens game. South Notts managed to put together a 2s/3s team to play Newark 2s at Bingham. 2s Captain James Middleton seemed relatively happy with the performance as the game ended 2-2. Some great saves by Danny Driffil kept Newark in contention and two great goals from Andrew Smith and Simon Higgs gave the team confidence going into the first league match next week (See the 2s section for the match report). Despite not having a game it was a reasonable turnout for the 1s as they had a session at the Magnus in preparation for their trip to Coalville next week.

Remember TRAINING 8:15 – 10 Wednesday

Lets make sure we can get as many people to training on Wednesday as possible so we are able to put out 3 full teams on the 1st.

Day 136: 19/09/2011:I have just returned from my honeymoon so there has been a lot of stuff that has gone on while I have been away.

Subs
The league season is fast approaching so this means Annual Subs are now due. Subs must be paid in full or conformation received that you have set up a standing order by the first league game on the 01/10/2011. If this does not happen you will not be allowed to play until you have sorted it.

Training
Training is well underway so guys please make sure you are ready to start with the warm up by 8:15pm so we can maximise the time we have on the pitch.

Friendly Matches
There is just one more week of friendly matches left with all 3 teams in action against various South Notts Teams. Results have varied so far but lets try and end on a high going into the first league games on the 1st. Well done this week to the Mens 1s who beat Lincoln 4-1 with 2 goals a piece from Nick Crouch and Uni bound Adam Reynolds. Also despite the results it was a good effort by all those who turned out for the 2s and 3s matches against Worksop.

England Hockey Vase
Newark has been drawn away at Coalville in the 2nd round of the England Hockey Vase after a bye in the first round. The match is to be played on Sunday 23rd October

Waitrose
Newark HC junior section has a fundraising box in Waitrose this month. You don’t need to spend much to get a token at the till that you can pop in the box on your way out!

FANTASY HOCKEY
Deadline for entry is fast approaching (01/10/2011) so get your teams to me as soon as possible

Day 114: 28/08/2011: Today Newark took 2 teams to play in the Leadenham mixed 7s at RAF Cranwell. With some last minuet withdrawals the tournament was played as a round robin with each team playing each other once over 25 minuets. Newark’s 2 teams consisted of Newark 1s made up of James Wakeland, Scott Robbinson, Ben Bradley, Camilla Johnson, Shanade Orsmond, Laura Donaldson and Sasha Orsmond and Newark 2s consisting of Me, Nathan Wakeland, Nic Jenner, Sue Tate, Emma Sanders, Charlotte Mills, Danny Driffill and eventually joined by late comers Sarah Pask and Lloyd Fletcher.

The full report can be found on the competitions section, but to sum up Newark 2s won the tournament with 4 straight wins Smile. 5-0 vs Newark 1s, 2-1 vs Boston, 3-0 (I Think) vs Leadenham and in the title decider we beat an Alford ringers team (that included ex Newark, Beeston and now Hamstead and Westminster player Sam Dixon) 9-2 with a fantastic team display.

Day 108: 22/11/2011:Just a quick update regarding the Fantasy Hockey:

1)Sue has sent a club wide email with the entry form attached but if you have not got one and want one please either e mail me or catch me at training.

2)The Team lists are no reflection on selection for this season they are just lists I have created roughly based on last season so please don’t take it to heart if you have been put in the wrong team. It is not up to me who plays for who.

3)Please make sure I have entry forms for teams before the 01/10/2011

4)Please do not pick Josh Dixon, Danny Hendrie or Adam Reynolds as I have been informed they will not be playing for us this season

On that note, congratulations to Adam on his A Level results and for getting into Birmingham University to study Medicine. (In 5 years we get ourselves a club Doctor, how exciting) Also good luck to Josh and Danny at their new clubs we hope to see you both back soon.

Day 101: 15/08/2011: Committee meeting attended today so I have lots of important dates and information to pass on

Day 94: 08/08/2011:After a busy period due to my Wedding and Honeymoon I was finally able to attend a Monday night session and what a well attended session it was. It was good to see so many faces in attendance.

Don’t forget training on Wednesday. The NEW KIT will be available to view. New shirts - £19.99. Orders can be placed with Amy Baugh or Ann Crockett-McLean.

Old Kit: sale of old stock at much-reduced prices - see Amy Baugh at training on Mondays and Wednesdays

One final thing There will be a Core members committee meeting on Monday 15 August 2011 at 7:30pm at The Barge but anyone is welcome to attend. If anyone has anything they want me to bring up let me know.

Day 73: 18/07/2011: Unfortunately I was unable to attend the Monday night session this week due to the fact I had my wedding rehearsal. However from what I could see when I drove past the Magnus on my way to the church the session was well attended.

On another note last Wednesday the captains and coaches had a very productive pre season meeting with lots discussed mainly regarding Training, Selection Policy, Junior Training and Friendly matches. I will post more details at a later date.

Day 67: 12/07/2011: Mimiking the success of the ladies were Myself, Tim and Pidge who were awesome at the Post Office Pub Quiz tonight even beating a team consisting of Newark HC's Taylor Sistors (Becky and Hannah)despite them bringing out their big guns.

Day 66: 11/07/2011:Attendance dropped a little this week compared to the previous outing but still an enjoyable session this Monday with the usual faces in attendance.

The Monday session however has taken a back seat this week due to the fantastic results from the ladies 2s. After topping the tables at Bingham Newark and the other top teams joined with the top teams from the parallel league being held at Rushcliffe for the Finals. In some exciting encounters Newark managed to keep their unbeaten record and walked away as champions Laughing Out Loud after recording victories against Derby, Dukeries and Boots

I have just received a message from Danny Hendrie “ There are 2 men’s summer league games this Thursday in Kirkby 7:15pm Push”. If you can play please contact Danny on 07904802322

Day 59: 04/07/2011: Great attendance tonight for the Monday night session, helped in part by the ladies not being at Bingham this week. On that note a huge congratulations to those who have been playing at Bingham as they have topped the tables and qualified comfortably for the final, so good luck in that.

Some great performances all-round tonight, Tim Mc Manus was again showing off his casual leave and the Smith brothers joined forces in their attempt to thwart dad Ace, however the clubs senior pro was more than up to the challenge. As usual Lowth and Crouch were all over the place putting in the yards and tackles (when I say all over the place I mean in a putting in a lot of effort sense not all over the place like headless chickens, although?) and Chairman Arran Coggan was doing his usual and making everyone else look good (only joking). The two James’s (Middleton and Watkins) were showing their defensive prowess with some clean tackles and good interceptions. It was also good to see some of the younger players playing well, Amber and Andrew Smith both held there own and put in good performances. In the battle of Nathan Vs Nic like the Haye Vs Klitschko fight for me Nath was the clear points winner (mainly because he was on my team) sorry Nic, hope I have not caused a domestic.

The fixtures for the Men’s 2011/12 season are now out. The 1s start with a tough yet winnable away trip to Coalville on the 01/10/2011 while the 2s are at home to Loughborough Sharks a team they had mixed fortunes against last season winning 8-1 at home but then losing 2-1 away. The 3s are also away against Worksop. Last season the 3s managed 2 wins against Worksop putting 9 goals past them, lets hope for more of the same this year.

Day 52: 27/06/2011: I think the heat put a few people off Monday night this week but the ten or so who did turn up despite the humidity had an enjoyable session. It was also nice to see a new face again this week, so Liam (Hope I got name correct) same time next week please.

Also if people know of anyone else male or female who wants to come down for a knock around (they don’t have to be a member or even a hockey player) they are more than welcome.

Day 50: 25/06/2011: Unfortunately I was not available for the Boots tournament on Saturday/Sunday but thanks to my reliable source (Nick Crouch) it sounded like the men gave a great account of themselves. They managed to reach the Semi finals and after a hard fort match with Team Awesome that ended 1-1 were edged out on flicks Sad . Good effort lads! Smile If anyone knows how the mixed went on Sunday please let me know.

Day 47: 22/06/2011: Mens league fixtures for 2011/12 are due out on the 04/07/2011 so watch this space.

Day 45: 20/06/2011: Another Monday night session has been and gone. The usual suspects were out in force less James W and Scott, however they were more than adequately replaced by one or two fresh faces in the form of young Andrew Smith (turning out for the first time) and Charlotte Mills. There was also a brief cameo from ladies 1s captain Sarah Pask.

It would be nice to see a few more down everyone is welcome. 7pm-8pm Mondays £1.50.

I believe Jim still wants players for the Boots tournament this weekend Mens and Ladies Saturday (25/06/2011) and Mixed Sunday (26/06/2011), all those interested please let him know ASAP. jim.wakeland3@gmail.com or text/call him on 07581198930

Day 43: 18/06/2011:Today was the annual Newark mixed 7s and apart from a few teething problems at the start and one or two organisational issues the tournament was a great success. There is a full match report by Danny Hendrie on the competitions section of the website so click on Competitions from the menu bar to have a look at that.

On behalf of the club i would just like to thank all those who turned out to help today especially Liz and Camilla and co for manning the desk and sorting out the scores and timing, also to all those who helped inside with the refreshments most notably Beth and to Danny for doing the presentation at the end. In addition thanks to Gavin and Dean for all the umpiring they did especially Dean.

In the end the tournament was won by Team Awesome for the 3rd time on penalty flicks after a 2-2 draw with Chestnuts. Newark was well represented with both semi-finals comprising of one team made up in most part by members of Newark, unfortunately both teams were edged out by the odd goal with Team Average losing 3-2 to Chestnuts after being 2 up and Kestrels unfortunately being edged out by the eventual winners Team Awesome 4-3

Day 39: 14/06/2011:Just some information about the Newark Tournament: If you are helping out we need people down from 8:30am to help set up. All teams that are down to play, I believe there are 12 need to register at 9:30am with the first matches starting at 10am. Matches will be around 20 mins one way. There will be 2 Pools of 6 so each team has a minimum of 5 games with the top 2 progressing to Semi then Final. John Reynolds has kindly donated refreshments so there will be drinks, chocolate bars etc available for purchase, so thank you John for that. Just leaves me to say good luck to all the teams and I hope it is a successful day. May the best team win!
If anyone needs any more information or if club members want to help out please contact Jim 07581198930 or Nic 07969601097

Day 38: 13/06/2011: Not as many this week to the Monday night session but those that were in attendance put on a good show in preparation for the Newark Tournament on Saturday. The lower numbers was in part down to the ladies returning to action at Bingham which meant the likes of Jim and Danny were not in attendance at the session (not saying they are women just they are kind enough to help out with the ladies).

Day 32: 07/06/2011: Just had text from our Competitions Sec Nic Jenner to remind everyone that we have entered a mixed league at Highfields (Beeston) that starts this Friday (10/06/2011) 7pm for the next 6 weeks. Players needed so please let Nic know as soon as possible if you can play, her e-mail is nicjenner1991@hotmail.co.uk.

Day 31: 06/06/2011: Fantastic turnout for the Monday night knock around with a good mix of old and young alike. Four teams battled it out in a round robin style tournament with everyone getting stuck in, even our illustrious chairman made an appearance.

Impressive performances all round Adrian ‘Ace’ Smith was rolling back the years and showing up his sons Sam and Tom with a dazzling display of ball control. It was nice to see Sam Dixon again but it was his younger brother Josh who was looking impressive linking up well with Robin Lowth and Sam Smith. Current Club man of the year Ryan Foster was also putting in the yards and playing well.

With the ladies not in action at Bingham this week it was nice to see one or two more turning up. Amy Baugh and Shanade Orsmond where playing well and despite playing in a very defensive position Amy was putting in some good last ditched tackles (Crouch take note).

It would be nice to keep the attendance high for the rest of the sessions, so same time next week please it will be good practice for all those who are planning to play in the Newark tournament on the 18th.

There will be a Committee meeting on Wednesday (08/06/2011). If anyone has anything they want to bring up please let me know on the e-mail address above (Mine not Nics).

Day 17: 23/05/2011:There was a decent turnout for the Monday night session, however a few more would be nice. The session gave me a chance to finally present Adam Reynolds with his 1st XI Players Player award that he was unfortunately unable to pick up at the presentation evening so once again congratulations to him.

In terms of the hockey there was some silky skills on show most notably from Sam Smith, Adam Reynolds, Scott Robbinson and Robin Lowth with Tim Mcmanus also showing us some more unorthodox moves. In the end the scores where pretty even with the Red and Black team (Sam, Scott, Adam, Steve, Beth and Me) dominating the early part but even with Crouchy playing in an advanced roll the Greens + Others (Nick, Ryan, Tom, James, Robin, Tim and Sarah) still managed a comeback in the second period.

With the Bank Holidy next Monday there wont be a session on next week so it will start again Monday 6th June 7-8, come down if you can

Day 13: 19/05/2011: I have just had a message from a former member of Newark HC Daniel Slinger (Very good Goal Keeper in his day and as I remember solid defender as well) Its very short notice but he is wanting to know if anyone is available to make up the numbers for Thames Valley Police at a tournament in Leeds this Saturday (21/05/2011) and Sunday his exact message is below.
“Long shot but if any lads are free this weekend and fancy playing a hockey tournament in Leeds, for Thames Valley Police, let me know. Games Saturday and Sunday. Hotel paid for, social events planned Friday and Saturday, and ladies teams there too..!! Any standard welcome.”If anyone is interested let me know.

Day 11: 17/05/2011: I will be attending a meeting tonight along with Ann and Amy regarding possible new kit so watch this space for details.

Day 10: 16/05/2011: Unfortunataly I was not able to attend the knockaround last night at the Magnus I was too busy getting beat at squash but will be hoping to attend next week. For all those that are interested James Watkins has hired a third of the Magnus pitch between 7-8 on a Monday evevning for a social knock around if you are interested it will only cost you £1.50 to help keep your eye in for the new season

Day 8 14/05/2011: Newark Show Weekend. I was only able to help out on the Saturday so I hope Sunday went as well, everything seemed to go ok on the Saturday despite Jim and Arran being given parking duties and Jo being let loose with the Credit Card machine.

Just like to thank everyone who turned up to help on the gate and with parking (could do with a few more from the mens section next time) and also to Jo Matson for organising everyone. This helps bring in a large amount of money for the club and you only need to give up a few hours plus you get free entry into the show.

Joynesys Journal Day 1: 07/05/2011: Congratulations and good luck to all those who were voted in at the AGM (Myself included). The AGM itself went fairly smoothly although it would be nice to see more members present next year. There were one or two contested positions that made the proceeding interesting and in the end we have got a great group of people on the committee this year so lets make it a great season for all.
