Ladies 1s & 2s
Newark Ladies 1st and 2nd teams travelled to play Spalding Hockey Club, also playing a modified match due to Newark this time struggling for players.
The first game for the 1s & 2s saw Newark take the upper hand winning 1-0, thanks to a goal from Vicky McMunn. There was little danger from Spalding in the first game, but this changed after half-time, when the hosts put out their 1st XI. Newark lost the second half 2-1. Overall, 2-2 was a good start to the pre-season.
Ladies 3s & 4s
The new season started at home for Newark Hockey Club with the Ladies 3rd and 4th teams playing a modified match of four quarters of twenty minutes, with Matlock HC being unable to raise two full sides.
Millie Wightman stood out for the team for her work on the wing, keeping the ball in play and speed, with Hannah Broomfield coordinating the defence .The Ladies 3rd XI got off to a winning start with a 2-0 result. Freya Grocock had a stunning game and made some excellent saves in goal. Laura McMunn played both games and ran further than anyone else! Sophie chambers made a return visit to the team and scored a lovely goal.
Mens 1s & 2s
Trying to put out 7 teams was a struggle for us all at the weekend, so there was also lots of cross overs in the mens section.
The Mens 2nd XI lost 3-2 to a Leadenham side, with captain Simon Higgs scoring one and Oli Phillips getting the other. Higgs was also instrumental in helping the Men's 1st XI win 4-0 at Spalding HC, scoring twice alongside a Scott Robinson penalty stroke and a re-debut goal for Sam Smith rejoining the club after a few years of isolation in deepest darkest Cambridgeshire.
Mens 3s & 4s
The Mens 3rd & 4th teams combined team lost 3-2 away at Leadenham HC, with Harry Beedham scoring both of Newark's goals.
