As many people know Tim Burch has now decided it is time to call it a day and retire from heading up the junior hockey section of Newark HC.
A presentation was made to Tim of a cheque for £500 towards a holiday for him and his wife, and additional vouchers for garden furniture. This year Tim has been rewarded for his volunteering by claiming the District's Volunteer of the Year award, was added to the County's Roll of Honour and given life membership of Nottinghamshire Hockey Association.
Tim has almost single handed increased the junior numbers at the club from 30-40 to well over the 150 that we get regularly now by visiting primary schools on a voluntary basis encouraging youngsters to take up hockey running after school sessions
In 2012 Tim set up a local school’s hockey league and there are 15 teams in the league from 14 different local schools. Sam White started to come from school to help. After Sam died Tim set up an interschool tournament at the end of the season and funded the trophy himself which Sam’s Mum and Dad present to the winners every year. Throughout the year Tim also organises regular fund raising events.
As well as organising the junior section Tim has been an active member of the club’s committee and regularly stands in for the club’s chairman increasing his contribution to not just the juniors but the whole club. Tim has worked closely and he has been a great source of support throughout the past few years. He has given the junior section of Newark Hockey Club direction in a structured yet fun laid-back manner and everyone at the club will miss him when he has gone, especially the youngsters who have never known Newark Hockey club without Tim Birch.
We’re not losing him totally, at the club’s AGM he was elected him as the first President of Newark HC, and he will continue to represent the club.
