Mens 2s v Burton 3s

Newark travelled to Burton looking for their 1st win of the season.

Newark were soon under pressure from the start with a well drilled opposition putting Newark’s defence on the back foot. With continued attacks coming the back 5 held firm under continued pressure.

Newark’s midfield worked hard to stem the Burton play and Newark built into the game with several quick counter-attacks seeing them win several short corners however being unable to convert any of them.

At the end of the 1st half the score was 0-0 and Newark had continued to improve in the game with some great passing move helping to take the game to Burton. In the 2nd half after many defensive short corner Newark finally let a goal in. After losing a defender for breaking early at a short corner the remaining 3 plus keeper Robbie Robertshaw couldn’t keep put the Burton attack and saw them go 1-0 down.

Newark continued to battle hard but were unable to find an equaliser but an definite improved performance from the previous two weeks which brings confidence that the 1st win is just around the corner.

Man of Match Ryan Parrett.

Ladies 4s v West Bridgford

The Ladies 4s travelled to West Bridgford to take on their ladies 5s. A strong start from Newark on a slow and sandy pitch saw them take the lead with a great cross from Edith, poked home by Alison Sheldon. With most of the possession kept by Newark, a few lucky breaks from West Bridgford soon saw them equalise and then take the lead with a classy reverse stick shot from their striker. It wasn’t long before they pulled further ahead, taking advantage of some miscommunication in the D. The centre of the pitch was well covered by Vicky Jones and Georgia S, with Sam Wade dropping back to cover any gaps. New player Rebecca held the right wing and was learning the rules as she went along - but did a great job! Edith did a storming job in defence and time and again ran the ball right up to the D. Georgia made a great lone effort when she found herself and the ball with not much between her and the goal and managed to bring the score back to 3-2 at half time. After half time, the game continued as before with end to end hockey but Newark having most of the possession, but were unable to capitalise on the breaks, unlike West Bridgford who had luck on their side when they did have the ball and managed to find the back of the net for a fourth time. In a last gasp attempt to score, a loose ball was chased down by Sam Wade and crossed hard into the D, to find Alison Sheldon waiting on the post. Sadly the deflection went just wide and the umpire blew for full time. A great performance by everyone and just unlucky it didn’t go our way today. Final score WB 4 Newark 2 Player of the match was jointly awarded to Edith and Georgia.

Reports

Ladies 4s v Ashfield Aztecs

The Newark Ladies 4 played against the Ashfield Aztecs on a miserable Saturday morning. Despite the weather, Newark were off to a good start, with Sam Wade scoring a good goal within the first 2 minutes.

After the first goal the Ashfield Aztecs came back with more vigour. Even with this, Newark were clearly stronger, and most of the game was played in the Aztecs’ half of the pitch. Newark managed to win several short corners, but unfortunately this did not provoke a goal.

The game slowly started to play in the centre of the pitch, even though Newark had a good set up of players across the pitch. Hannah B acted as a nice pivot. Within a short time Newark scored again, raising the spirits of the team higher.

Half time score was 3-0 to Newark.

The second half consisted of the Aztecs coming back even stronger. Once again, Newark managed to score. But, the Aztecs managed to take advantage of a stray hit across the D and slot one home.

The second half of the game was definitely more evenly matched, as both teams were using the widths of the pitch more. Edith especially making runs down the wing from her defensive position, making sure that Sam, who was in the Aztecs’ half, received the ball. And within the last two minutes, Newark managed to score a final goal from the stick of Holly.

Final Score:

Newark 6 - Ashfield Aztecs 1

Goal scorers were Georgia, Anna Kempster, Vicky Jones, Sam Wade (2) and Holly.

Player of the match - Georgia
